So they are much more comfortable during the treatment. The metal braces we use are made of either medical stainless steel or titanium.

More specifically, titanium orthodontic brackets are made of the most biologically acceptable metal for the human body. Titanium is used in medicine in many surgical applications. In addition, it offers better adhesion to the teeth which helps in less detached brackets during the treatment and thus faster progress of the treatment. It does not contain nickel, which is rarely able to cause allergies of the oral mucosa. Finally, it is friendlier to the tooth enamel when detached from the teeth at the end of the treatment, as it is a softer metal.

All mechanisms used in addition to the brackets are manufactured in a specialized external orthodontic dental laboratory by an orthodontic dental technologist. The materials used follow all European Union safety guidelines. Each device is made exclusively for each patient and is not reused. The paints chosen during the manufacture of acrylics are non-toxic and the mechanisms are disinfected before delivery to our patients.

When there is important problem on the position the jaws, e.g. severe protrusion of the upper jaw and dental malocclusion, the usual orthodontic treatment with braces is not enough. In these cases, maxillofacial surgery is necessary for the correct and complete correction of the skeletal disharmony. Maxillofacial surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital.

The correct diagnosis at the start of orthodontic treatment and the simulation of the final result allows us to be sure for the progress of treatment, but also allows us to have an estimation of the final image of the patient’s face. Thus it is necessary to take initial photos and x-rays, where with the help of special software the orthodontist can simulate the final result of the treatment.

The coordination of the whole process is undertaken by the orthodontist in collaboration with the surgeon who will perform the surgical operation. The procedure usually involves preparing the mouth for some time with orthodontic mechanisms, performing orthognathic surgery and completing the orthodontic treatment continuing with the orthodontic mechanisms.

Orthognathic orthodontic treatment is selected in adults whose skeletal growth has been completed and conventional orthodontic appliances do not allow us to improve their skeletal problems. If the appearance of the face is not a major concern, but the patient is only concerned about the correct positions of the teeth, we decide together what is the most appropriate treatment for him.

Lingual orthodontics is mainly suitable for adults who need orthodontic treatment and have intense aesthetic concerns. It is the most aesthetic way to correct orthodontic problems, achieving excellent results.

As a rule, the duration of treatment with lingual braces corresponds to the duration of an orthodontic treatment with conventional mechanisms and depends on the initial orthodontic problem of each patient.

Sleep Apnea – Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (ASD)

In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airways are usually narrowed during sleep. The muscles relax and the tongue falls backwards, causing the airway to close completely. Patients after trying to breathe with great difficulty, then wake up. As a result their sleep is interrupted several times each night. This results in intense tiredness and drowsiness during the day with reduced efficiency and increased risk of accidents.

Narrowing of the pharynx from the fall of the tongue is one of the main causes of obstructive sleep apnea. The severity of the syndrome depends on the number of apnea episodes that occur per hour during sleep. Up to 5 episodes per hour is considered to be no apnea syndrome as long as there are no clinical symptoms.

Mild Degree: 5 – 14 episodes per hour.

Moderate Score: 15 – 29 episodes per hour.

Severe: 30 or more episodes per hour.

The clinical signs of apnea syndrome are:

Intense snoring and restless sleep

Small awakenings or awakening with a feeling of drowning, in prolonged apnea

Morning headaches

Daily fatigue and drowsiness

Impairment of memory and ability to concentrate

Sexual dysfunction – impotence

Nocturnal urination

For mild to moderate cases, dentistry offers anterior mandibular guiding devices to free the airway. These are mobile (removable) devices that are placed in the mouth before going to bed. With these, the lower jaw is pushed forward, as a result of which the tongue is displaced at the same time and the airway is released.

Patients with snoring or sleep disturbances during sleep should first consult a specialist (ENT, Pulmonologist). The specialist can determine if there is a sleep disorder, which can be treated with the help of an anterior guidance device of the lower jaw.

In most cases, snoring can be reduced so much that the partners can sleep next to each other again without any discomfort. In addition the patient begins to enjoy his sleep without unnecessary interruptions and feels rested throughout the day.

30% of head injuries occur during sports activity. A large percentage of these injuries involve the mouth area, ie the teeth and the adjacent soft and hard tissues with serious consequences for the athlete. In addition, an injury can cause bone fractures in the facial area (cheekbones, nose, lower jaw). Also, in both children and adults, the condyle is the most vulnerable area of the lower jaw. Fractures of the bone at the area of the condyle, can cause long-term, facial deformity problems. In children, fractures of the condyle mey prevent the development of the lower part of the face.

80% of tooth injuries involve the 4 anterior upper teeth. Athletes with dental malocclusions, as well as with incompetent lips which do not protect their teeth, are more likely to have dental injuries. It has also been observed in people who have suffered dental injury once, the risk of recurrence of a traumatic event increases to 49%.

Preventive measures to reduce the prevalence and severity of dental and maxillofacial injuries include helmets, face masks and protective mouthguards. The athletic protective mouthguard is an intraoral, mobile device made of a special elastic material with resistance to deformation, the use of which helps to reduce injuries to the teeth, temporomandibular joint, upper and lower jaw bones and intraoral soft tissues. The protective splint should be made under the supervision of the dentist and the final product should have specific properties and specifications:

1) To have been made after taking impression of the athlete’s teeth.

2) Have a suitable thickness in all areas of the splint to ensure damping of forces after impact.

3) Have a balanced closure when the teeth come in contact.

4) Be made of approved materials.

5) To be systematically checked by the dentist.
